Mr. Paul Opanga
Paul Opanga is the Labour Issues Manager at the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Before that, he had been with FSC for nearly three and half years as the Sub regional coordinator for East Africa. He has worked closely with stakeholders in grounding the Standard Development Group (SDG) in Tanzania that developed FSC Tanzanian National Stewardship Standard (NFSS) and further initiateded dialogue with stakeholders on forest certification in the East Africa sub region.
Mr Opanga has first degree in Forestry from Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya, master’s in urban and regional planning with bias on urban forestry at Built Environment at University of Nairobi, Kenya. He is a strong advocate of social inclusion in sustainable forest management processes with knowledge on labour standards including Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues in forestry workplaces.
Apart from addressing labour issues, at local, regional and global processes with Building Woodworkers International BWI), Mr Opanga has served at the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) Major Group Steering Committee. He has experienced in community forestry where he worked closely with Maasai communities in dry-land restoration projects in Elangata Wuas, Kajiado district in Kenya,
Mr Opanga has been active member of Kenya forestry profession where he previously served as the secretary of the Forestry Society of Kenya (FSK) and a member of the Editorial team. Currently he chairs the Finance committee, which is tasked with matters of fund raising and investments.
